Baconsale Episode 74: Soundtrack and Feels

Hear that? That’s the sound of Kent and Joel discussing great movie music. They spend the first little bit arguing about scores versus soundtracks, actually, but then they get into the categories such as the best animated score, iconic 90s soundtrack, the film soundtrack everyone had and the best scores from John Williams and Danny Elfman (or Elf-Man, as Jacob calls him).

  2. I can’t believe Kent has never seen all of Moulin Rouge. He sat through the pilot of Twin Peaks and watched whatever that weird show was with the the big screaming white ball but can’t finish a really great movie?

      1. What is insanity is that some old dude can come up to you and say, “Hey, you should watch this weird show about an island with a screaming ball” and you jump at the chance to watch it. But you have friends, wait no, you don’t have friends….But you have people you know, saying “This is a good movie. You should watch it.” and you refuse to even give it a chance. To think that you watched Sausage Party (Yes I read your review of it) but won’t watch Moulin Rouge. At least watch it so that you can say, “Yes I watched it all and I hated every minute of it.”

  4. Jurassic Park theme totally brings me back to my childhood too. I think I may have seen it in the theater 7 times too. When it went to the dollar theater, my friend and I would go to the first showing then hang out in the arcade/bathroom/etc until the next showing started and snuck in. Yes, we were that cheap.

      1. Oh yeah! my brother and I would look through the movie listings in the paper, jot down the run times for each movie, then plan out how we were going to see them all on one ticket without having to hang out too much in the lobby or miss the first few minutes of a movie. From there it was a simple leap to ditching piano lessons, toilet papering friends houses, pouring a concoction of cooking liquids into the 16th hole of the golf course, and finally culminating in stealing a street sign for a street called “Why Worry Lane.” I couldn’t bring myself to hang the sign on my bedroom wall because I was worried I would get in trouble. I ended up hiding it under my mattress and forgetting about it. Years later when I returned from my mission, my mom had found the sign and hung it on the wall. It was a bitter reminder of a past transgression.

  5. I didn’t own many soundtracks, but occasionally I liked a soundtrack so much I had to buy it. Here are the ones I owned: Moulin Rouge, Power of One, Holes and Big Fish. I don’t listen to music very much these days, but instead listen to audiobooks and podcasts (well, only one podcast). I would say that the Holes soundtrack is one that really makes me want to get up and dance. Moulin Rouge is definitely the romantic soundtrack (Come What May is even on my wedding video).

  6. I love listening to soundtracks! To me that means the scores.. not a huge fan of all the pop songs associated with movies. Except for Kanye, he’s so talented and I really like the street cred he gives to movies that without him would totally be cred-less, you know?

    Here’s my list:

    Fast driving: Star Trek: Into Darkness (I’m a huge Trekkie BTW, if you ever need someone for an episode on Star Trek and happen to be in Detroit, let me know). I love the new theme they came up with for the reboot trilogy. Haven’t seen Beyond yet but I’m cautiously optimistic it will be good… or at least ok..
    Want to be a Super Hero- Man of Steel, my favorite track is the one that starts really quietly that was used to show him when he was a kid with the red blanket used as a cape. Great soundtrack.
    Romantic- Les Miserables, Master of the house is just so romantic. Right in line with all the music from Moulin Rouge… yes that is a shot at Moulin Rouge.. did not like the first 20 minutes, kind of whacky over the top awkwardness. Sorry Joel.
    Animated: I really liked the superhero music from The Incredibles. Wish they were making a sequel.
    Character Theme: Imperial March.
    Elfman Score: Nightmare before Christmas.
    Workout: Black Hawk Down (really gets you pumped)
    Sleep: LOTR
    Study: Last of the Mohicans/Saving Private Ryan. Both of these were popular in my mission, as well as Gladiator and Braveheart.
    Score: Star Wars. Can’t be beat.
    Fighting: The Dark Knight
    Learn Martial Arts: 1 Song- Duel of the Fates. If I had to pick a soundtrack I might pick the Last Samurai or Ip Man
    Makes you Scared: The Prestige music is haunting. I love it.
    Gotta Watch it right now!: A Knights Tale… One of my favorite movies of all time.
    Reliving High School: Ok, bear in mind I went to high school between 2006-2008 so you guys will not like my picks, well you may like one of them but the other you’ll hate. The first is The Rocker, I thought they did a pretty good job of making fun and catchy songs without being to cheesy. I was really surprised how well it turned out. The other one that you will hate is A Cinderella Story. It was really popular when I went to school with my friends and the music reminds me of being back there… not too bad of a movie.. in my opinion haha but that may just be nostalgia.
    80’s iconic: Footloos
    90’s iconic: The Mighty Ducks
    Reliving my Childhood: HOOK!!
    Better than the Movie: All of the prequel Star Wars films. Most notably Revenge of the Sith
    Soundtrack everyone had: (Keeping in mind this was big when I was in Junior High) A Walk to Remember. Switchfoot did a pretty good job with their music. I like some of the songs on the soundtrack still like Learning to Breathe.
    Makes you Dance: I can’t not pick Footloose. There is no one on this earth that would be able to resist dancing when this soundtrack plays.

  7. Kent, did the claw really ever work? I’m having trouble picturing it. The image that comes to my mind is you putting your arm on the armest palm up and making your hand do in imitation of a chicken foot.. That’s not the best description but it relays how awkward “the claw” sounds to me. I also imagine one of those three eyed aliens from Toy Story popping up over your shoulder, pointing at your hand, and saying “Oooooo the claw!” looking at the girl and saying “you have been chosen!”. I preferred the pinky-bump technique. Subtle and gave the greatest chance of avoiding awkwardness when getting shut down.

    1. Ooo, I like the sound of the pinky-bump. I always tried the Creeping Pinky. It was an okay move, but took forever to get there.
      Yes, you nailed the look of The Claw. And yes, it’s just as terrifying as it sounds.

    2. Eventually I just stopped pulling moves and grabbed their hand. It’s pretty bold but worked out most of the time.. 60/40… with the 40 percent being mostly resulting in painfully awkward evenings.

    3. The creeping pinky is the funniest name for a move I’ve ever heard hahaha how does that one go again? I heard you guys talk about it before on an episode but I can’t remember the specifics. Also you guys should do a dating etiquette show, help out the more singlefied listeners with breaking down moves that work and Jacob can take us through how dating works in Amish culture.

I think the creeping pinky method is executed by putting your hand near to or next to her hand, then you first slowly move your pinky to the side, so that it just taps or touches her pinky in a way that could be excused as just a nervous twitch, and giving her an opportunity to move her hand if she does not want to touch you. Then if she doesn’t move her hand, you move your pinky again by raising it and reaching over her pinky. She then reciprocates by bending her pinky and embracing your pinky. Then from there you lose focus on the movie and slowly begin intertwining the rest of your fingers with hers and the rest is history. Done correctly you’ll be engaged within 6 months.

      2. BTW – I’m not sure I would trust these guys to provide any proper etiquette for dating in general, but maybe they could do a date movie episode. What are good first date movies, second date movies, etc. Or do they even recommend movies for first dates. Personally, I never liked movies for first dates. My preferred first date in college was to take my date to Gandalfo’s for dinner then to an improvisational comedy show (sorry not QuickWits – Comedy Sportz). How do they feel about themed dates with movies? (in high school my friend and I set up a TV in my attic then watched Arachnaphobia with our dates. While the movie was going, my little brother crawled through the rafters and dropped plastic spiders on them).

      3. The date movie idea would be good. I still think, even if the advice wasn’t great, it would be funny to do a date etiquette episode and the strategies they used while dating combined with good and bad date movies.
        The pinky bump and creeping pinky I think are the same. though the pinky bump I think is a little quicker in progression, no strange pinky wrestle going on. You bump her pinky, if she bumps back you pull a smooth slide with your hand and boom! hand holdin’ like a pro. Also a benefit to the pinky bump is you can pull it while standing next to her. The creeping pinky doesn’t sound as conducive to that situation.
